IB Learner Profile and Approaches to Learning
The IB MYP encourages students to take some responsibility for their learning by encouraging them to develop their academic interests. The Learner Profile is comprised of three key components:
- A set of personal characteristics that describe the learner's personality. These include self-awareness, motivation, resilience, curiosity, creativity, independence, responsibility, adaptability, perseverance, and social awareness.
- Cognitive abilities include reading comprehension, critical thinking, problem-solving, logical reasoning, verbal communication skills, and visualization.
- Knowledge, skills, and conceptual understanding across a range of disciplines, which include the ability to apply concepts, analyze information, synthesize ideas, make choices, work independently, communicate, and reflect.
The IB Learner Profile instills a profound commitment to respect in the school community: respect for self, respect for others, and respect for people all around the world.
Education is not just about what a student learns, but also how he or she learns it. Students learn different approaches to develop skills and the personal characteristics needed to become independent learners. There are 5 Categories of ATL Skills:
- Thinking Skills
- Communication Skills
- Self Management Skills
- Research Skills
- Social Skills
These skills are explicitly taught, modeled, and practiced in the classroom.
